Partisan politics are destroying America. The country is growing more and more polarized with each day that passes. It seems that nobody cares about the content of a politician’s message, just the letter by their name. Congress today is increasingly reflective on our population’s partisan divide. GOP senators and house members have little to no reason to listen and compromise with their Democratic counterparts. Since the beginning of the United States, people have chosen sides. Whether it be the Loyalists and the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, the Unionists and the Confederates during the Civil War, the hippies and the conservative generation during the 60’s or the Republicans and the Democrats today.

Why is it a big deal?

I’ve mentioned before that the people of the United States have been taking sides in national politics since the beginning. It wasn’t a big deal until the late 60’s when the partisan divide had grown stronger, America started to become polarized. Baby boomers had the opportunity to move wherever they want, into like-minded communities where it was often an echo chamber. In those echo-chambers there was little to no competition for local and county government thus giving no reason for the majority party to compromise with the minority party. Neither sides would go home at the end of the cycle as winners because no new ideas were being implemented and corruption would grow.

A good example of this would be New York. Current Governor, Andrew Cuomo campaigned on cleaning up Albany for the better. What he didn’t mention was the fact that he would exclude himself from any and all anti-corruption laws.

What can we do?

This problem of blind partisanship will not go away overnight. It’s a product of the previous generation’s unwillingness to compromise. Don’t get me wrong, political parties are good. They help garner support for a certain candidate. Though, supporting a candidate just because of their political party is lazy and it needs to stop. We as a people need to stop supporting milquetoast candidates and start nominating people that know how to do their job. It’s time to get rid of career politicians and start nominating doctors, engineers and other professionals.

If we do not solve this problem, the insanity that is currently Washington, DC we will continue to see non-action over issues like immigration, national security and climate change.
