Dear liberals, conservatives, and everyone else with a pulse:
In a perfect world no one would be bothered by a group of millionaires kneeling during a song – yet here we are. For the past month the “take a knee” protests have been plaguing every media outlet imaginable. Television talk shows, “news” outlets, and social media pundits from both sides of the aisle have been voicing their heated opinions on the subject. In reality though, none of this matters. The sheer fact that both conservatives and liberals have nothing better to do than to argue over such a minuscule topic is an embarrassment to everyone involved.
First of all, liberals, these protests do absolutely nothing to combat the causes you think they do. Police brutality and social injustice cannot be combatted by kneeling during a sporting event. One could argue they raise awareness for these topics but that implies Americans don’t think racism is an issue. That couldn’t be more wrong. According to a Pew Research Center Study, the number of people who think racism isn’t a problem in the U.S. is well under 10%, meanwhile the number of people who think it poses somewhat of a problem sits above 80%. Americans who think that racism is ‘a big problem’ outnumber those who say it’s ‘not a problem’ by nearly 20 to 1.
Imagine if instead of blindly raising their fists and pointing at the phantom of “institutional racism” they’d all, in unison, speak against proven acts of racism and hate in America. Not only would this be a much less controversial approach to the subject, it’d provide their audience with an actual factual argument, rather than baseless allegations. Ben Shapiro said it best,” You have to find individual instances, you have to show me who the racists are so we can fight them together.”
Now, to my conservative friends: let Kaepernick and other NFL players do their thing. You may think they’re offending veterans or disrespecting the country, and at the end of the day you’re entitled to your own opinion, but so are these players. If the owners of these teams have no issue with the protests, you shouldn’t either. If anything you should be proud that we live in a country where the government can be openly opposed, no matter how controversial the protest method is.
All too often I see tweets from conservative pundits like Tomi Lahren throwing around the word “snowflake” and “triggered” followed by her nagging on about an issue so minuscule as kneeling. The left notices these contradictions and uses them against us, it’s easy ammunition. We as conservatives need to stick to our guns and protect free speech, even if we disagree with it.
America has too many issues for liberals and conservatives to be bickering with each other such a silly topic. Our debt is at an all-time high and race relations are at an all-time low. Instead of focusing on this paper cut we seem to have acquired, let’s focus on the knives that keep stabbing us.
