For the past 10 years Bill Nye has been seen an an advocate for science. He is the reason many of the younger generation of engineers and scientists have chosen their respective fields. Recently, Bill Nye has made some questionable decisions. Nye has been quoted saying that people who deny climate change should be imprisoned aswell as more recently saying that gender is a spectrum. Scientists interjecting themselves into politics by making outrageous comments not only makes science look bad, but also makes those who say those things look bad. It’s time we start questioning the “scientists” that make outrageous comments like that.

Is Bill Nye really a scientist?

One of the things that people have to realize when they listen to “scientists” is that not one person can know everything about anything. With that being said — Yes, Nye is a “scientist”. Although Nye makes comments about climate change and gender doesn’t make him an expert on it. Bill Nye has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and plenty of other honorary degrees from Cornell.

Should we throw away Nye’s claims because he is only an engineer?

No, we shouldnt. We should not throw away his claims only because he is an engineer. Engineers have created many of the equations and formulas we used in chemistry, mathematics and physics today. We should throw Nye’s claims out based on the fact that he isn’t backing up anything with scientific claims, only his feelings.

As an advocate of science, Nye often used to say that the scientific process could make a scientist out of anyone. It’s easy to agree with what he said, but it seems that now even he doesn’t agree with what he said. It’s easy to see why people would be skeptical of Nye when he calls for people who disagree with his hypothesis to be imprisoned. That isn’t science, that’s an influential pseudo-scientist making claims to advance a cause politically — something that I, personally cannot get behind.
