The latest uproar in national politics has been FCC chairman, Ajit Pai’s attempt to end net neutrality. Many on both the left and the right have been vehemently opposed to the attempts of the FCC chairman. The question we need to ask ourselves is simple: Why does the federal government need to dictate the practices of ISPs around the country? Many people argue if ISPs had unlimited power over the internet they would split the internet up into packages where we could only access certain websites, sort of like TV. But is that true or is it sensationalist propaganda spread by websites that hog bandwidth?

The Internet has only been governed by Net Neutrality policies since 2015

In 2014, President Obama had asked the FCC to consider tougher regulation on the Internet. After the President’s and Mitch McConnell’s failed attempts at SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) to regulate the internet, the President needed another way to seize control of information online.

Net Neutrality was intended to stop internet fast lanes, a practice where ISPs could charge website owners for priority traffic. In other words, ISPs would slow down other websites and make other, corporately owned, websites load faster. Ultimately, Net Neutrality ended up doing the exact thing it was meant to stop. Tom Wheeler, the then-FCC chairman had originally intended to preserve the practice which was allowed by federal courts.

Net Neutrality, like all government initiatives, is a misnomer

Just like the PATRIOT act was not patriotic, like the USA FREEDOM act was not promoting freedom and the LIBERTY act which is being introduced to the House of Representatives is not giving us more liberty. Net Neutrality will preserve the monopolies that Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Verizon, and Google have over the internet. All regulations by the government usually do the opposite of what they intend to do.

Continuing Net Neutrality means Congress and Donald Trump hold the key to the internet. Do the liberal progressives really want the man they truly believe is evil and will start World War III to hold the keys to the last true bastion of freedom of expression? I think not.

Kim Dotcom, an internet pioneer, had stated yesterday that repealing net neutrality will bring about a new era of innovation. Mark Cuban, another internet pioneer, said with net neutrality services like VOIP (Skype, FaceTime, Ovoo) and pioneers like AOL, Compuserve and Prodigy would not have been possible. It’s a fact that government regulation hampers innovation. When is the last time we seen air travel change for the better? Do we want that to continue happening to the internet?

If the Internet were to remain free and open, Net Neutrality needs to go. Now.

Like Kim Dotcom said, the corporate owned internet needs to be replaced. Companies like Twitter, Facebook, Apple, and Google (Proponents of Net Neutrality) are strangling the internet with their anti-competition attitudes and free-speech killing motives. If people do not want Twitter and Google to continue to censor them, then Net Neutrality needs to go as soon as possible.

The fact of the matter is that all of the companies that support net neutrality are all of the companies strangling the internet and shaking freedom of speech by its foundations. Companies like Google who are censoring people on YouTube for their conservative views and Twitter who are actively purging conservative commentators are the ones fighting for “internet freedom”? Do they think we are stupid?

Our world is run by the internet. Net Neutrality means that the fate of the internet will be ruled by white-haired sex abusers on the Hill. Do we really want people who have no understanding of technology to hold the key to it? I think not. But maybe I am wrong.
